Rep. Nancy Mace Slammed the Deadlocked Massachusetts Jury in the Lindsay Clancy Trial

Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina criticized the jury in the Lindsay Clancy trial after jurors reported they were deadlocked. Mace said the case is about justice for the children, and argued that postpartum mental illness deserves serious medical attention but should not function as a defense to homicide. She framed the verdict as a test of whether the lives of three children weigh less than the state of mind of the person who ended them.

Clancy, 36, is charged in the January 2023 deaths of her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Her defense rests on an insanity claim. Jurors are weighing murder against manslaughter, and recessed again on September 1 without reaching a verdict.

One point being widely misreported online is worth stating plainly. Massachusetts abolished capital punishment in 1984. The death penalty was never on the table in this case. A first-degree m*rder conviction in Massachusetts carries life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The jury has not returned a verdict.
